Colic Relief for the Colicky Newborn

General Add comments

You know colic has no known cause and no known treatment. Still, your baby has been wailing for hours. What can you do to help? Try natural herbs to give your baby colic relief. Dill, peppermint, chamomile, and fennel are very soothing. Dilute one of these herbs in your baby’s formula towards the end of the feeding. Probiotic supplements that are added to milk may also give colic relief, especially if the baby’s colic is associated with use of antibiotics.

Other home remedies that may give colic relief include offering a pacifier and keeping the baby in motion. Sucking is soothing to babies so a pacifier might help your newborn calm down. Motion might help, too, because it distracts babies from their crying. Gently rock the baby to sleep in your arms or on a swing specially designed for infants. Or, take your baby for a walk. You could also take the baby on a drive. These activities will stimulate your baby’s senses and might stop the crying episode. If they don’t work, the best that you can do is keep calm. Your baby’s crying has nothing to do with illness or injury. Colic is normal in newborns and will eventually go away.
