Importance of Rotator Cuff Exercises

General Add comments

Once your physician has determined that you have a torn rotator cuff, he/she will probably want you to see a physical therapist to obtain a plan of exercise to try to restrengthen the shoulder before the option for surgery is considered.

Your physician and your physical therapist will both recommend a course of action that includes ice, heat, anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen, and some basic rotator cuff exercises. These rotator cuff exercises will be designed to restore the natural flexibility to the shoulder as well as a full range of motion and strength. The success of the physical therapy will depend on the severity of the original injury and your commitment to following the exercise plan precisely.

At no point in your rehabilitation period should you be doing any type of activity or exercise that causes you pain in your shoulder. If you do experience pain in your shoulder, you can be that you are either not doing the exercise correctly or you have re-injured your shoulder. If this is the case, you should discontinue any and all exercises for your shoulder until you have had an opportunity to speak with your physician.

Once you have injured your rotator cuff once, it is very easy to injure it again. To avoid this, you will need to continue your rotator cuff exercises even after your rehabilitation period is over. This will take a lifetime of commitment if you wish to keep your shoulders healthy.
